Stratford was established in 1639 by Puritan pioneer Reverend Adam Blakeman, William Beardsley, and either 16 families (as indicated by legend) or around 35 families (proposed by later research) who had as of late touched base in Connecticut from England looking for religious opportunity. In 1639 the General Court in Hartford made reference to the town as the "new estate at Pequannock" In 1640 the network was known as Cupheag, a Native American Paugussett word signifying "at the encased spot" or "spot of asylum".
