Once called the "black pearl of Fairfield County," the town of Easton Connecticut is located just past the Merritt Parkway near to Fairfield, Monroe, Trumbull, and Redding. This idyllic spot brings to mind a quiet New England spot with farms, antique homes, winding roads, and stone walls.

The area was first settled in 1757 and was originally part of Fairfield along with the neighboring Weston. Easton incorporated in 1845 and is now on the register of historic places. The residents love the historic aspect of their town and it was remained relatively unchanged. You won't find any streetlights, mainstream shopping or malls in Easton. There isn't even a grocery store. If you blink, you'll miss the town center which consists of a gas station dating back to World War II and a general stores where you can pick up some basic items as well as some of the best deli sandwiches around.

Across from the town center, you'll find the local fire station which holds a carnival every year. You may think of Easton as a sleepy spot but the residents love that it has the feel of a carefree town reminiscent of a bygone era.

Sights and Attractions

Although you won't find a bustling metropolis in Easton, that doesn't mean that you won't have plenty of things to enjoy. One of the best spots to visit is Silverman's Farm. This is especially attractive in the fall months. The farm is well-known for offering apple and pumpkin-picking during the peak fall season. You can enjoy tractor rides while in the area and make sure to stop by the store. They offer great apple cider donuts and pies. There's a little something for every age and children love the petting farm located here as well.

The residents also enjoy fine dining and good foods. Sport Hill Farm offers a variety of seasonal produce, dairy, and some meat products that are fresh and tasteful. To enjoy local produce, you can also visit the Old Aspetuck Bluebird Inn. This spot is well-known for its hearty breakfasts and the charming restaurant is full of decor that make it seem like a 1940's spot. Come here with an appetite and make sure that you order their blueberry muffins to go.

The historic aspect of the area is not to be ignored though. The town also boasts Union Cemetery which dates back to the 1700's. It's been highly documented in many books and documentaries. In fact, this spot is considered to be the most haunted cemetery. It's a local legend that a woman known as the White Lady walks through the cemetery at night. There are numerous stories about her but it's said that she's looking for her son who died before she did.

Prominant Residents

Easton keeps a low profile but it's had its own share of well-known residents. Helen Keller made Easton her home towards the end of her life. In fact, the middle school is named after her. Dan Rather, Jessica Tandy, and Human Cronin also have called Easton home. The town is also notable for having supplied a Norway spruce for the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree in 2009.

Demographics and Characteristics

Easton could best be called a suburb with a population of just over seven. The population here is relatively affluent and most of the residents are homeowners. The rural feel of the area has an uncrowded aspect and you'll find a variety of coffee shops and parks. The schools here are highly rated with excellent average grades and test scores. The population of Easton tends to be politically involved and liberal-leaning. Many of the residents work in New York City although the 50 mile commute can be daunting for some.

The small town has only three public schools, elementary, middle, and high school. They also have a community center which offers a preschool for children ages two to five years old.
